WNCC Douglas Students Benefit from Smallwood Foundation Grant

Western Nevada Community College is once again the recipient of a generous grant from the Smallwood Foundation, a private, family foundation created to support projects that enhance the quality of life in Douglas County as well as Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas.

Suzy Stockdale, whose family provided the funding to create the foundation, lives in Douglas County and is its chairman. "The Smallwood Foundation is pleased to be a partner with WNCC in the effort to provide quality education opportunities in Douglas County," said Stockdale.

The growth of WNCC Douglas is reflected in the use of campus science facilities, which has increased over 250 percent from 2003 to 2005. It was this growth that generated a need to enhance the science lab, and the Smallwood Foundation provided $15,000 for the project. The Smallwood gift is designed to make changes to the science lab that enhance the preparation area and facilitate student learning.

It is now possible for students to complete their UNR core science requirements at the Douglas campus along with all of the prerequisites for the WNCC nursing and surgical technology programs.

Dick Kale, coordinator of Academic and Student Affairs at the Douglas campus, said "As we embark on a master planning process this fall to increase the educational opportunities for Douglas County residents at the WNCC Douglas campus, the generosity of donors like the Smallwood Foundation contributes to economic development and enhanced quality of life for our community."
