estern Nevada Community College's new women's soccer team has hit the ground running, literally. The Wildcats soccer team ran, kicked and defended itself to a 2-0 record in its first weekend of competition. At a tournament in Eureka, Calif., Western beat Mendocino College 2-0 and then host school College of the Redwoods, 2-1, and placed three Wildcat players on the All-Tournament Team.
"The team agrees - it was a great weekend to be a Wildcat," smiled Head Coach Hillary Arthur today. She said the inaugural outing helped her team to gel, and it was gratifying and exciting to come home victorious.
Three Wildcat players were named to the All-Tournament team: North Valleys High graduate Melissa Goldfin (offensive center-mid), and Douglas High grads Savannah Gray (forward) and Jessica Maule (defensive center-mid). Gray scored three of Western's four goals in the tournament, while Maul added the fourth.
"Gray's style of play is so unpredictable," Arthur said, "which is what makes her dangerous to the opponent's defensive line." The forward "will sacrifice her body to score a goal, and that's what it takes to be successful in college soccer."
The coach touted Maule's versatility when she played her usual defensive midfield position but also helped at right-back to shut down offensive attacks from the other team. "Maule has the ability to settle the ball, get her head up and find the penetrating passes into the offensive third, as well as being a patient defender."
Goldfin, said Arthur, "is plain and simply put, a work horse. She owned the middle by shutting down Mendocino's and College of the Redwoods' offensive threats and then quickly transitioning herself to be a playmaker and support for the forwards."
