WNCC Fallon Math Instructor Jeffrey Downs has been chosen as a prestigious Project ACCCESS fellow for 2005-2006, one of only 32 college faculty members nationwide, and the only Nevadan selected this year.
ACCCESS, which stands for Advancing Community College Careers: Education, Scholarship and Service, offers faculty members the opportunity for professional development and mentoring. The project's goal is to provide experiences that will help new faculty become more effective teachers and active members of the broader mathematical community. It is sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges and the Mathematical Association of America, and is funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation.
Downs will represent WNCC this week at the AMATYC national conference in San Diego, which will be attended by more than 1,000 math faculty and scholars.
Downs said, "I am honored to represent the WNCC math department and campus as a whole at the AMATYC conference. I want to thank President Carol Lucey, Vice President Connie Capurro, and my Department Chair, Dr. Mike Hardie, for making this opportunity a reality. As I prepare to depart, my mind is on what I am to learn and what I will bring back to benefit our college."
