Raising funds for the Wildcats baseball team was 'in the cards' on Thursday, Nov. 10, as the first Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament to benefit WNCC generated some $15,000 in donations. The tournament at the Peppermill Hotel & Casino drew nearly 70 entrants who played cards to raise funds for the baseball team's 2006 travel budget.
"We consider the tournament a success. In just one night of fun, with the gracious support of all the entrants, our program was able to raise a third of our travel budget," said Assistant Coach Andrew Patterson.
He gave much of the credit to Peppermill Poker Manager Ira Cohen and his staff. "Ira and his staff were very professional, and they understood the environment was going to be much more relaxed than typical poker tournaments."
At the end of the night the player holding all the chips was Kyle Fine of Reno. He took first prize, a year's golf membership at The Resort at Red Hawk in Sparks. Along with Kyle, seven other players took home prizes.
