WNCC Photos Take Education Around the World
Imagine being on a college campus and traveling the globe at the same time. Western Nevada Community College professors Chris Ryan and Jayna Conkey did just that over the summer when they taught on a cruise ship as it traversed Europe and the Atlantic. Now, they bring their colorful cultural experiences to life in "Northern Europe," a photographic exhibit showing December 19-January 26 at the College Gallery in the Bristlecone Building. A reception for the artists is set for Thursday, Jan. 26, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Ryan, a professor of Geographic Information Systems, and Conkey, a professor of Graphic Design, taught in the "Teachers at Sea Program," where K-12 instructors travel while they earn graduate credits through the University of Nevada, Reno. Ryan taught geography and Conkey taught photography and also photographed the group’s journey.
In a 70-day voyage, the group visited Halifax, Nova Scotia; Reykjavik, Iceland; Bergen, Norway; St. Petersburg, Russia; Gdansk, Krakow and Auschwitz, Poland; Antwerp, Belgium; Paris and Normandy, France; Dublin, Ireland; and Bilbao, Spain.
The images are a small selection of the sights and individuals the professors encountered during their journey. WNCC Carson City is located at 2201 W. College Pkwy.
