Western Nevada Community College's baseball team (15-13, 9-7 in conference) started off Sunday's game with a run in the first inning and never looked back winning 1-0 against Salt Lake Community College. With the victory, the Wildcats evened the weekend series with SLCC at two a piece.
On Sunday, the Wildcats received strong pitching from starter Josh Brink, Ryan Iodence, and Stephen Sauer who combined to shut out Salt Lake. Kyle Bondurant scored the game's only run in the first on a bases loaded walk. Runs were hard to come by in the series because of good pitching and bitter cold days.
On Saturday, WNCC was down one run when Salt Lake intentionally walked Tyson Jaquez to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Outfielder Pat Grennan smacked a clutch two-run single, as Carson High grad Aaron Henry scored the winning run on a close play at the plate to end the game. Pitchers Justin Garcia and Dan Grubbs combined to allow only one run, which came on a wild pitch.
In the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, the Wildcats lost 2-0. Western had hits by Bondurant, Jaquez, Chadd Dudley, and Thomas Miller, but failed to score any runs. Starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough, Chad Riddle and Grubbs limited Salt Lake to two runs on seven hits. The Wildcats lost Friday's second game 4-1. Grennan smacked a single that drove in Thomas Miller in the fifth. Pitchers Mason Tobin, Jake Bottari and Riddle gave up four runs.
WNCC will travel to Price, Utah, this weekend to play the College of Eastern Utah in two doubleheaders starting at 1 p.m.
