Western Nevada Community College's baseball team (19-13, 13-7 in conference) won their sixth game in a row in impressive fashion sweeping a four-game series from Eastern Utah in Price, Utah, last weekend. With the victories, the Wildcats moved into a three-way tie for second place in the Scenic West Conference with Dixie State and Southern Idaho.
In the first game on Friday, WNCC won 2-1 on a solo home run by Brad Carlsen in the seventh inning, his second of the season. A bases-loaded walk brought in the first run in the fifth. Starting pitcher Justin Garcia gave up one run to Eastern Utah, with Dan Grubbs earning the win and Ryan Iodence pitching the seventh for his fourth save.
The Wildcats again received quality pitching to win Friday's second game 2-0 in ten innings. Starter Cole Rohrbough, Grubbs and Iodence combined on the shutout. Kyle Bondurant lead off the tenth with a single, and Chad Walling pinch ran for him and stole second. Carlsen hit a sacrifice fly to move Walling to third, and then Pat Grennan knocked him in with a clutch single. Grennan then stole second, and scored an insurance run on Tyson Jaquez's single.
WNCC pounded out 11 hits in each of their games on Saturday. Thomas Miller crushed his third home run of the year in the first game to lead the Wildcats to an 8-3 victory. Starter Stephen Sauer gave up three runs in five innings, and reliever Jake Bottari threw a scoreless sixth and seventh.
The Wildcats closed out the series with a 7-2 victory. Starting pitcher Chad Riddle, and relievers Bottari and T.J. Wohlever combined to hold Eastern Utah to two unearned runs. Wohlever was fired up in the finale, as his fastball hit 91 miles per hour on the radar gun.
The Wildcats will travel to Twin Falls, Idaho, this weekend to play a crucial four-game series against the College of Southern Idaho. Both games will be doubleheaders with Friday's games kicking off at 1 p.m. and Saturday's games beginning at noon. On April 7-8, WNCC will return home for another big series against Dixie State in the first-ever games at John L. Harvey Field.
