Western Nevada Community College President Dr. Carol Lucey recently named the 2006 WNCC Presidential Awards for Excellence winners. Three employees were awarded as part of the Nevada Community Colleges Conference, that was held at the Community College of Southern Nevada on Friday, April 28.
The Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence was awarded to Bonnie York, computer technology professor. Retiring this year after 29 years of teaching at WNCC, York has dedicated her life to shaping the college's computer program. She was responsible for establishing the first computer networks and labs in Fallon. She was the first recipient of the WNCC Outstanding Faculty Award, and has also served on the college's curriculum, peer development, sabbatical, and faculty senate committees.
Claire Yurovchak, student activities coordinator, was honored with the Presidential Award for Administrative Excellence. Hired at WNCC in 2004, Yurovchak's accomplishments include creating the department of student activities, developing an annual cultural art series, and teaching a three-credit course on leadership development. She also serves as chair of the WNCC Multicultural Festival, and as an advisor to the student government and student programming board.
The Presidential Award for Classified Staff Excellence was given to Barbara Ford, institutional research statistician. In her 11 years at WNCC, Ford has coordinated student course evaluations, survey development and implementation, and Classified Employee of the Month elections. She has also served on the by-laws, professional development, classified council, and search committees. Outside the college, Ford is actively involved with Boy Scouts of America and the Pearl Harbor Survivors group.
