Western Nevada Community College's baseball team finished their inaugural season in third place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference tournament, taking one of three games last week at John L. Harvey Field. The Wildcats recorded an impressive 37-18 overall record and a first place finish in the SWAC regular season.

The Wildcat bats came alive in Thursday's second round win against Salt Lake Community College, 9-1. WNCC scored eight runs in the fifth inning highlighted by a three-run double from Taylor Mieras, a two-run double from Brett Mosher, and an RBI double from Jerahmie Libke. Tyson Jaquez started the scoring for WNCC in the third with an RBI single. Starting pitcher Justin Garcia again showed why he's the staff ace as he went the distance, giving up only one unearned run on five hits.

WNCC lost Friday's first game 4-0 as their bats went cold against tough Dixie State College pitching. Pat Grennan had three hits in the contest, and Thomas Miller and Taylor Mieras added a single apiece. Starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough struggled with his control, giving up three runs in 1.3 innings. Dan Grubbs then relieved Rohrbough to get WNCC out of the second inning. Stephen Sauer relieved Grubbs in the third and pitched the rest of the way, giving up only one run.

In Western's second game Friday, the College of Southern Idaho outlasted the Wildcats 4-3. Western left the bases loaded in the eighth inning after making it a one-run game on a Jaquez RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Grennan. CSI then fell to Dixie State 9-1 in the tournament championship Saturday.

The inaugural season was a hit with the Wildcats finishing in first place in the SWAC conference regular season. John L. Harvey Field also opened at WNCC and was home field for the final two series of the season, and the SWAC tournament.

WNCC third baseman Tyson Jaquez was named to the SWAC All-Region First Team; he has signed to play next year at the University of Nevada, Reno. Other Wildcats were also honored, as Kyle Bondurant, Thomas Miller and Dan Grubbs were named to the all-region second team.
