Sable Shaw, Western Nevada Community College nursing program founding member, professor, and former director, will retire this spring after 24 years at WNCC. A nursing alumni reunion and celebration of Shaw's many contributions will be Sunday, May 21, 4-6 p.m., in the Bristlecone Building Main Art Gallery. Friends, colleagues, and current or past nursing students are invited to this free event.
During her career, Shaw has seen the WNCC nursing graduating classes grow from 15 to 42. "When I started, students camped out on the building steps to get in the program," Shaw said. "Now I'm starting to see the children of my first students entering the program."
Shaw has also seen some amazing improvements in the nursing lab, as well as the students, over the years. "We have an adult mannequin, and will add an infant soon, to simulate real-life emergency situations," she said. "As a whole, the students are very dedicated. They know what they want, they're willing to work, and they come with assertiveness."
More than 500 nursing graduates have benefited from Shaw's teaching. Shaw and Cheryl Moreland were founders of the WNCC nursing program, the first and only instructors when the program began.
"Sable leaves an indelible imprint upon the nursing program and college that reaches far into the larger community which she has faithfully served," Nursing & Allied Health Director Judith Cordia said.
