Hours of studying, taking tests, and attending classes will pay off for 371 Western Nevada Community College students receiving associate degrees and certificates of achievement on May 22 in Fallon, and May 23 in Carson City.
Fallon commencement will take place 7 p.m. Monday at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 Park St. Carson City commencement will take place 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William St. A Nursing Pinning Ceremony will also take place Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the community center. The Surgical Technology Pinning Ceremony will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in WNCC's Marlette Hall.
Graduates will range from teens to grandparents, singles to moms, and first-time job seekers to career professionals. This year's youngest graduate is 19-year-old Kerianne Carlisle of Carson City, and the oldest is 76-year-old Joyce Bedell Martin of Gardnerville.
Many of the graduates, like Nevada System of Higher Education Regents' Scholar Diane Dahnert from Fernley, plan to transfer to the University of Nevada, Reno, to work toward a bachelor's degree. Dahnert, who graduated with a 3.91 grade point average, attended classes while working, volunteering in the community, and raising a family.
Fallon Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. will give the commencement address in Fallon, while NSHE Regent Howard Rosenberg will offer the address in Carson City. Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center President & Chief Executive Officer Ed Epperson and University of Nevada, Reno Cooperative Extension Educator Steve Lewis will receive honorary associate degrees in Carson City for their many contributions to the college.
Graduates hail from Carson City, Fallon, and all over Nevada, as well as California and many other states.
