Seniors will have a new resource for healthy living this fall when Western Nevada Community College, in partnership with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, launches a new senior college class. "Health & Wellness for Seniors," offered on Mondays and Wednesdays 10 a.m.-noon at WNCC Fallon, will provide an overview of wellness issues that can influence an older person's quality of life.
"The goal is to equip seniors with better knowledge and hopefully see them make a change toward better health," Instructor Rori Lee said. "We will measure body fat and cholesterol, and then see how they're doing as the class progresses."
Topics will include maintaining a healthy mind and body, advice about health care costs, the latest on Medicare and Social Security benefits, and weekly hands-on experiences to learn new ways to exercise, plan meals, and assess current health.
The non-credit class will run in three different modules from September 11 to December 13. Cost is $10 per module and participants can choose one, two, or all three modules. "The first module will cover health care costs; the second will offer ideas on nutrition and cooking; and the third will go over social and emotional issues," Lee said. Exercise will be incorporated in all three modules.
Lee graduated with honors from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 2004, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies. She is pursuing a master's degree, as well as certifications in gerontology and as a family life educator. Lee also has previous experience working with senior citizens.
