According to Western Nevada Community College instructor Mike Reynolds, all six astronauts who traveled to the International Space Station last month on the Space Shuttle Discovery got their start in aviation ground school. WNCC is offering this class and many more non-credit, community education classes this fall starting Monday, Aug. 28.
Private Pilot & Sport Pilot Ground School (CMSV 170C, Call #37478, Sec. C01) is open to students 16 years and older, meeting on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. "People who take the class may develop a true appreciation for aviation," said Reynolds, a former military test pilot and sport pilot instructor. "It may even launch their career in aviation or the aerospace industry."
Students who pass the class will be provided with a certificate of graduation, which permits them to take the FAA private pilot written test at any authorized computer-testing center. Cost: $250.
People interested in creating their own home makeover can take Interior Redesign (CMSV 087C, call #38041, Sec. C01) on Mondays, Sept. 11-Oct. 2, from 7-9 p.m. This non-credit class will cover "one day decorating" that uses design principles and existing furnishings, accessories and collections to create a "new look" without having to buy anything new. The course will cover de-cluttering, organizing, decorating, and redesigning of interior spaces. Cost $80.
Lights Video Action (CMSV 094C, call #31183, Sec. C01) offers a chance to learn from a professional producer how to produce a video. Participants will develop a script and assume a role as a crew member or a performer, then work on the preparation, set up and editing of the program. The course will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 19-20, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Cost: $175.
Other community education class topics include arts & crafts, ballroom dancing, belly dancing, Feng Shui, genealogy, investments, self discovery, self-defense, swing dancing, swordsmanship, Tae Kwon Do, and Tai Chi. Some of the standard and most popular classes offered are CPR, Driver's Training, Forklift Training, Nevada Traffic Safety School, and the Motorcycle Rider Course. A full class schedule is available on campus or online at www.wnc.edu.
A 20 percent discount is offered to Nevada residents 62 years or older on community education classes, excluding Driver's Training and Motorcycle Safety. Senior students do not have to pay registration, application or admission fees, but must pay a $4 per credit technology fee.
