The Wildcats (5-6-2) women's soccer team lost a close game 3-2 in overtime to North Idaho College Saturday at the Edmonds Sports Complex. The loss dropped Western one game under .500 in their quest to qualify for the Scenic West Athletic Conference tournament.
Western's Courtney Hayes scored the first goal in the contest on a long, high shot from midfield at the two-minute mark after taking the ball away from a North Idaho defender. The Cardinals answered with a goal at the 30-minute mark.
WNCC's Courtney Lenhart then added a goal, her third in three games, on a pass from Phalon Mauntel at the 35-minute mark to make it 2-1. Jessica Maule had another opportunity to score but missed a free kick over the net right before halftime.
The second half opened with a bit of controversy. At the 60-minute mark, Lenhart appeared to score a goal with the ball getting behind the North Idaho goaltender. The referee ruled that the ball did not completely cross the line, keeping the score 2-1. At the 72-minute mark, the Cardinals tied the game 2-2.
The teams traded scoring chances early in overtime, before North Idaho's game winner that zoomed past goaltender Allie Otto, who made 15 saves in the defeat.
Star sweeper Dominique Gloude was again held out with a nagging knee injury.
Despite the loss, WNCC will likely reach the tournament and face Salt Lake Community College in their first game. The Wildcats will finish out the regular season with five straight road games starting Wednesday against Feather River College in Quincy, Calif.
