Western Nevada Community College, in partnership with Sierra Nevada Truck Driving School, is bringing a Commercial Driving License class to Hawthorne. SNTDS will take their school "on the road" from its location in Sparks and drive three Class "A" truck-and-trailer rigs to Hawthorne for the three-week training, as long as 8-12 paid student enrollments are guaranteed.
"We must have a commitment from each student firmly in place if we are going to hold the training in January," said Bus Scharmann, dean of the college's Fallon campus and rural development. "It is great to work with a company that will bring their services to rural Nevada, and SNTDS is really not even raising their prices. They understand the need and are willing to address it as they partner with WNCC."
The cost of the course is $2,000 plus a $200 fee to test locally after instruction is successfully completed. In addition to the financial commitment, students must plan to attend class five days per week for three weeks. "We need to establish serious interest in this opportunity," Scharmann added. "We must have the names of the individuals and have an idea of how they are going to pay for the class."
Funding sources may be difficult to locate, but prospective students are encouraged to discuss their interest in the CDL training with representatives from Job Opportunities of Nevada, JobConnect, or the Nevada State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Interested individuals should contact WNCC at 775-945-2405, or e-mail WNCC Hawthorne Coordinator Lou Thompson or Scharmann.
