Instructor Puts Everything Into Teaching Criminal Justice

Western Nevada Community College instructor and Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy Bob Kahn is a very dedicated person. When he teaches his classes, he puts everything into them. Some days he works straight through lunch, teaching up to 10 classes a day.

“I enjoy teaching criminal justice and believe I have a very important teaching assignment,” Kahn said. “To know that what I implement or what I teach has an impact on young lives, really says it all.”

One of the spring classes Kahn will be teaching at Western is Introduction to Criminal Justice (CRJ 101, Call #15556, Sec. E01) on Thursdays from 7-9:45 p.m. This three-credit course will survey the history, philosophy and functions of the criminal justice system, law enforcement, criminal law and constitutional rights as they affect system functioning. Cost: $169.50.

Kahn is well qualified to teach the class. “I have been a teacher for the past 25 years,” he said. “Ten of those years were in elementary education and 15 in law enforcement, teaching child safety classes to children and adults.”

He has been a deputy sheriff with Lyon County since 1991. He has a master’s degree in school administration, a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, and an associate degree in criminal justice.

Kahn has also been a student at Western for several years. “I have attended American Sign Language and computer classes to maintain my Nevada teaching credentials,” he said. “I have found that WNCC is easy to attend and has flexible hours that fit with my busy schedule. It is time well spent.”

Spring classes begin Monday, Jan. 22.
