The Western Nevada Community College baseball team will open its 2007 season this weekend in Henderson and immediately be faced with its first big challenge. The 2006 Scenic West Athletic Conference champions will play two Arizona schools - Yavapai College, ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA, on Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., and Cochise College on Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m.
"We are very fortunate to play a great schedule against the some of the best teams in the county," said Head Coach D.J. Whittemore. "It provides excellent motivation for the players and coaches alike. The reason we spend the money to fly around and get our brains beat in by ranked teams is so that when conference play roles around we are more prepared to deal with the likes of former national champions College of Southern Idaho and the Community College of Southern Nevada."
The Wildcats will again have a tough schedule in their second season with 32 of their 54 games on the road. Western will go up against five of the top 20 NJCAA teams in Collegiate Baseball Magazine's preseason rankings.
After opening against No. 2 Yavapai, the Wildcats will play No. 7 Orange Coast College on February 1, No. 3 Santa Ana College on February 2, and a doubleheader with No. 11 New Mexico Junior College on February 10. During the conference season, Western will play No. 17 CSI eight times, March 2-3 in Carson City and April 6-7 in Twin Falls, Idaho.
