It was nice to be home for the Western Nevada Community College baseball team after 13 straight road games. The Wildcats (6-7-1) won two games against the University of California, Santa Cruz, Sunday at John L. Harvey Field. Western grabbed the first game of the doubleheader 2-1 and then busted out in a 9-0 win in the second game.
In the first game, the Wildcats received strong pitching performances from starter Jake Bottari, and relievers TJ Wohlever and Jeremy Joustra. Bottari (1-0) picked up the win by pitching three scoreless innings and striking out three. Wohlever matched Bottari's effort with three scoreless innings of his own, and Joustra allowed one unearned run in three innings.
Second baseman Kyle Bondurant and catcher Taylor Mieras each had two hits and an RBI to pace Western's offensive attack. Shortstop Kevin Schlange added two hits and outfielder Brad Carlsen contributed one hit.
In the second game, the Wildcats scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Bondurant was the star again with two hits and three RBI. First baseman Andrew Reid added two hits and two RBI, and designated hitter Thomas Miller and Schlange drove in one a piece. Schlange continued his hot streak with three hits.
Starting pitcher Chris Rickey (1-0) held the Banana Slugs to one hit and no runs in three innings while striking out four. Relievers Josh Creveling, Wes Osmer and Dan Grubbs combined to pitch the final four innings giving up only one hit and no runs.
The Wildcats will travel to Henderson Friday and Saturday to open up Scenic West conference play against the Community College of Southern Nevada. Western will play a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
