Hear Fascinating, Fun Stories about "Black Rock"

The Black Rock Desert is a 400-square-mile, relatively flat, prehistoric lakebed that lacks any animals or vegetation. Photographer Peter Goin and geographer Paul Starrs will bring this area alive with their wonderful stories, fascinating characters and unbelievable antics in a free lecture at Western Nevada Community College's Marlette Hall on Thursday, April 12, at 7 p.m.

The "Exposed to the West: Black Rock & Other Stories" book signing and lecture is the fourth installment of Western's 2006-2007 Faces, Voices & Stories Cultural Series that is sponsored by the WNCC Office of Student Activities & United Students Association.

Goin and Starrs will share their 20 years of beautiful photos of the area, as well as their exploration “below the surface” of the desert’s geographic composition and salt pan playa.

Goin’s photographs have appeared in more than 50 museums nationally and internationally. His awards are many, including an Emmy nomination for his video work and the Governor’s Millennium Award for Excellence in the Arts. He is a foundation art professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. Starrs is a geography professor at Nevada and a past recipient of the university’s Researcher of the Year Award.

Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
