The Western Nevada Community College baseball team (25-20-1, 19-13 conference) captured three of four games from Salt Lake Community College Friday and Saturday in Salt Lake City. With the victories, the Wildcats pulled ahead of SLCC in sole possession of third place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, five games out of first and four away from second, with eight games left in the regular season.
"Winning three out of four games on the road is extremely difficult, especially against a quality team like Salt Lake," Head Baseball Coach D.J. Whittemore said. "It is very gratifying and rewarding, and I'm proud of our team's effort. I think we are peaking at the right time."
In Friday's first match, the Wildcats piled up five runs in the second inning and then added one in the third, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to win 9-4. Kyle Bondurant had three hits and two RBI to led the Wildcats. Taylor Mieras and Brad Carlsen added two RBI each, and Andrew Reid, Andrew Ferguson, and Logan Parsley drove in one a piece. Starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough (6-3) picked up the victory, striking out six, walking two and allowing only one earned run. Reliever Jeremy Joustra finished the game pitching a scoreless seventh.
In the second contest, WNCC led most of the game, scoring two runs in the first and one in the fifth, but lost 4-3. Reid continued his hot streak with a 3-3 effort and 2 RBI, and Cliff Shepard went 1-3 with one RBI. Starting pitcher Justin Garcia (6-4) got tagged with the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, in four innings. Reliever Dan Grubbs finished the game pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two.
WNCC took Saturday's first game in extra innings 1-0 behind a strong pitching effort from Stephen Sauer (5-3). He gave up only one hit in seven innings and struck out six to earn the victory. Joustra then came on to get three straight outs in the eighth for his third save. Ferguson scored Western's winning run in the eighth on an error by Salt Lake's third baseman. Ferguson, Reid, and Thomas Miller had hits in the contest.
The Wildcats put an exclamation point on the weekend winning Saturday's nightcap 7-3. Shepard led WNCC with three hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Carlsen had a triple that drove in two, and also scored two runs. Bondurant, Anthony Garcia and Mieras each had one RBI . Starter Josh Creveling allowed two runs in two plus innings, and relievers Joustra, Jake Bottari and Grubbs combined to hold SLCC down. Joustra (1-2) picked up the victory with two plus scoreless innings.
The Wildcats will return home Friday and Saturday to face Colorado Northwestern Community College in two noon doubleheaders at John L. Harvey Field. Tickets are $6 for adults; $3 for seniors 60 and older, youth 18 and younger, and WNCC faculty and staff; and free for WNCC students with ID, as well as children age 4 and younger.
