Strong pitching has carried the Western Nevada Community College baseball team (34-22-2, 28-15 in conference) all year. In the Scenic West Athletic Conference playoffs, Western's pitching was even better than advertised. WNCC pitchers allowed only six hits and no runs in three tournament victories last week in Twin Falls, Idaho. The Wildcats will open a three-game series Thursday in Henderson against No. 16-ranked Community College of Southern Nevada for the Region XVIII Championship.
In the first playoff game on Thursday, the Wildcats pulled off a 3-0 victory over Colorado Northwestern Community College. Starting pitcher Jake Bottari (3-2) pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits and striking out nine.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the first on two wild pitches and one in the seventh on Thomas Miller's RBI sacrifice fly. Kyle Bondurant had four hits to lead the attack, and Andrew Ferguson added a pair. Logan Parsley, Chuck Howard and Andrew Reid also came through with one hit each.
In Thursday's second game, starter Cole Rohrbough (9-3) dominated in the 5-0 victory over second seeded College of Southern Idaho. He allowed only three hits in 8.2 innings and struck out nine. Reliever Dan Grubbs came on to get the final out.
Brad Carlsen smacked a solo home run in the third to give Western a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats added four runs in the eighth to put it away. Pat Grennan, who went 3-4 in the game, drove in three with a double, and pinch runner Chad Walling scored on an error by the first baseman.
On Friday, the Wildcats caught a break when CNCC eliminated CSI in an upset win. Western then dominated CNCC 6-0 to advance to the championship series. Starting pitcher Justin Garcia (8-5) was un-hittable through six innings, with eight strikeouts and no walks. Jeremy Joustra relieved him in the seventh and continued the no-hitter. TJ Wohlever pitched the next scoreless inning, but allowed two hits. Stephen Sauer pitched a hitless ninth.
Taylor Mieras had an RBI double in the second inning to give Western an early 1-0 lead. Bondurant added a two-run single in the fourth for a three-run cushion. Grennan added a single in the fifth that drove in two, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Mieras.
The Wildcats will play at 6 p.m. each day in Henderson. Western hopes to advance to the Western Regionals May 17-19.
