It was an open and shut case for the Western Nevada College women's soccer team. The Wildcats opened their season over the weekend in Redding, Calif., and shut out both opponents. WNC (2-0) topped Butte College 6-0 on Friday, and then dominated Shasta College 9-0 Saturday.
"Getting two solid victories and winning the tournament was a great start to our season," said Head Coach Hillary Arthur. "Our midfield really stepped up."
In Friday's game, Nicole Garn, Kim Duke, Alexia Balmaseda, Cassie Romeo, Jordan Forman, and Jessi Chitwood all scored goals for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Allie Otto held Butte scoreless.
Saturday, Ashley Winter and Romeo were stars for the Wildcats with two goals apiece. Rachel Van Roy, Virginia Loyola, Devon Wellington, Balmaseda, and Duke each added a goal, and goalkeeper Kalah Minter held Shasta scoreless.
The Wildcats will look to remain undefeated Saturday as they travel to Victorville, Calif., to play in the Victor Valley College Cup against Antelope Valley Community College at 1 p.m. and Grossmont Community College at 9 p.m. "Now it's time to go back to work," said Arthur. "This will be a big test for us this weekend."
Western opens this season with five games on the road. The Wildcats' home opener will be Friday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. against Lassen College at the Edmonds Sports Complex, 1555 Livermore Lane.
