"Fragments of Latin America," an collection of photographs by Western Nevada College Graphic Communications instructor Jayna Conkey, will hang in the College Gallery Monday, Oct. 29, through Thursday, Nov. 29. The exhibit features digital photographs from Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.
Conkey traveled with her husband, WNC Geographic Information Systems Professor Chris Ryan, as he taught on a Semester at Sea Voyage in Latin America. "I took hundreds of photos and as I was editing them, I asked myself how one can travel to eight different countries and bring back images that fully describe each place," she said. "This impossibility resulted in the title of the exhibition."
Photographs made during the trip proved to be challenging due to the extremely high temperatures and humidity. "At times my camera got so hot it locked up," Conkey said. "I had to turn it off and turn it back on to resume taking pictures. Much of the digital noise in the images comes from these high temperatures."
