Reno Artist Brings Two Shows to Western Nevada College

Candace Nicol offers two exhibits at WNC Carson City in the coming months. "Waiting for the world to change…" is showing in the College Gallery through February 22. "Assemblages" will show through April 8 in the Bristlecone Building atrium. An artist reception is set for Tuesday, Feb. 5, 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. She will offer a lecture and workshop from 1-3 p.m. in Aspen Building 210, which others are welcome to attend.

According to Nicol, "The works in 'Waiting for the world to change…' have been created as a direct response to my experiences growing up within a multicultural, multiethnic family as well as experiences faced after 9-11 and the fear our country's leaders have instilled upon us. The prints embedded in resin represent the psychological restraints we put upon ourselves and others; the underlying ideologies that shape our viewpoints; and the complications that arise from interactions between people of different races….it is my attempt to grasp and understand the duplicity of public fear and prejudice with personal stories and experiences."

"Assemblages" offers multimedia, layered images that explore the complexities of thought and memory, Nicol said. "I'm constantly questioning the perception of images, the relationship between the conscious effort of remembering and the unconscious fragments that invade recalled information. The layered boxes that I have constructed begin to capture the moment the unconscious and conscious unite, creating a poetic sequence, an implied narrative representing the deluge of family relationships, social schemas, and secrets."
Nicol teaches printmaking and design at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, and is co-founder of the Northern Nevada Printmakers' Conspiracy. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from Boise State University. Her work is frequently exhibited nationally and internationally and is part of permanent collections at the Boise Art Museum, Corcoran College of Art and Design, Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper at Rutgers University, Southern Graphics Council Archives, The Kinsey Institute, University of Sharjah in Dubai, U.A.E., and Painting and Sculpture Museum Association, Istanbul, Turkey.
