Annual event shows through April 4Recycled Art(icles) Show Kicks Off 13th Year at WNC
"It's a fun show," coordinator Julie Lewis de Witt says. "It makes people laugh. We always hear a lot of laughter in the halls when it's on exhibit." Laughter can come from surprise at the realization that a delicate rendering of a hummingbird and flower is made from old kitchen utensils. Or viewers may smile at the incongruity of a sculptured puppy with a happy expression made entirely of heavy sheet metal. Creativity reigns as local artists of all ages produce amazing pieces with clothes washer drums, bottle caps, toilet plumbing parts, old CDs and microchips, spent ammunition, and plastic bags, to name a few of the common items that have been given new life. Last year's reception featured a fashion show of clothes made from recycled items. A Carson High School senior made five different outfits and used her friends as models. Traditionally coinciding with Earth Day, this year's show starts earlier, March 3, and runs until April 4. There is no entry fee to submit works, which will be accepted Monday through Thursday, Feb. 25-28, at the college information desk in the lobby of the Bristlecone Building. This year, notes or brief stories about the work can accompany the entry. Awards will be given at the artists' reception on Friday, April 4, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. WNC's Associated Students of Western Nevada will again provide prize money, and artists may offer their works for sale. Best of Show earns $100, while Most Creative and Most Useful award winners each receive $75. Contact deWitt at 445-3274 for more information or an entry form.
