WNC to Host Feather River Friday/Saturday
The Western Nevada College Wildcats baseball team is planning a homecoming earlier than expected. The only question is whether Mother Nature will comply.
After being on the road for its first 13 contests, Western was scheduled to play Feather River College this weekend at Quincy, Calif. But poor field conditions at FRC are forcing a location change to John L. Harvey Field at WNC Carson City. Games are set for 1 p.m. Friday, and a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, weather permitting.
Western's young team (6-7) has faced three tough weekend series against dominating Arizona teams before heading for California's central valley last weekend to take on College of the Redwoods and San Jaquin Delta College. Western found the aluminum bats being used at the California contests to their liking, pounding out 38 hits for 32 runs in the two contests. The Wildcats dominated College of the Redwoods 15-2 on Saturday, and Delta College 17-4 on Sunday.
According to Head Coach D.J. Whittemore, the team has made improvements in its opening month. "We're getting better, and we'll continue to get better if we can practice." Wintry conditions have prevented the team from practicing on the field until just the last day or two. "It's really nice to see the guys swing the bats," he said, adding that "it's a lot easier to swing aluminum" versus the wood bats that WNC uses in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
John L. Harvey Field is located at WNC Carson City campus, 2201 W. College Parkway, at the south end of the campus. Information: 445-3000.
