"Vantage Points" to Show in College Gallery

Student Photos Inspire Creative Writing

Inspired by photographs, creative writing students at Western Nevada College have written literary pieces to accompany the images. The result is an art exhibit entitled "Vantage Points," opening Monday, March 31, at the College Gallery in the Bristlecone Building.

"Most of the photos were taken by Dr. John Lagios, a Carson City neurologist, and Doug Deacy, both my creative writing students," said English Professor Marilee Swirczek. "Their insightful visual work inspired the idea for the show, and writing students produced thoughtful, and in some cases, breath-taking poetry inspired by the photographs. We have more than 50 photos and nearly 100 poems; the gallery will be awash in visual and literary images."

The show will run Monday, March 31, to Thursday, April 10, with a reception on Friday, April 4, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

"We call the show 'Vantage Points'. The photographer offers one point of view, the poet another, and the viewer who observes the juxtaposition of both the photo and the literary work creates a third, often startling insight," Swirczek said. "This is a neat collaboration in which the audience is a real participant."
