Kyle Starratt is a Mountain View High School grad from Boise, Idaho who pitches for the Western Nevada College Wildcats. But if you ask him his favorite state right now, it might be Utah.
Starratt was named National Junior College Athletic Association pitcher of the week for his strong pitching against Salt Lake Community College. He tagged the previously unbeaten Salt Lake Bruins with their first conference loss on March 14. He allowed only three hits and struck out nine in beating them 6 to 1.
Coach DJ Whittemore said this is the first time a WNC player has received national player of the week recognition. "Kyle pitched a nine-inning complete game, he had a perfect game going into the sixth inning and a no hitter into the seventh. He won against a previously unbeaten team and finished with nine strikeouts."
Starratt is back from another successful trip to Utah, allowing only two hits in six shutout innings and walking none in a 5-3 victory over College of Eastern Utah in Price on Friday. (March 28)
"Kyle is our number one pitcher," WNC Coach DJ Whittemore said today. "He's been very consistent all year. He's extremely tough to hit early in the game. Other than a couple of outings where we left him in a little too long, he's been nearly perfect for us all season. He's a tremendous worker, a great leader. He's really deserving of the honor.
