Riverside Sweeps Baseball Team
Coach DJ Whittemore said he's going to try to wake up the Western Nevada College offense when it plays four games in the Sacramento area Friday and Saturday against American River College, Cosumnes River College and Sierra College.
Junior college powerhouse Riverside Community College swept WNC last week in three games: 9-3 on Wednesday; 6-2 on Friday and 10-2 in the completion of Thursday's suspended game.
Wednesday, Western scored three runs on six hits including a home run by right fielder Lance Ray in the first inning. Ray and shortstop Daniel Zylstra singled in the third inning, and left fielder Brian Barnett scored in the sixth after singles by Ray and third baseman Travis Feiner. WNC's final run came in the seventh inning when center fielder Jay Skilton walked and then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring.
On Thursday, five Western players managed one hit each: Ray, Barnett, Feiner, catcher Corey Raymond, and second baseman Mike Stiles. Both Wildcats scores came in the sixth inning when Raymond singled and then stole second, and Ray singled for the RBI. Ray then stole second before Feiner doubled to bring him home.
In Friday's game, Western's only score came in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Ray that brought in Barnett. Left fielder Marshall Kennebrew added a single, and Barnett doubled in the eighth.
WNC is now 2-5 and looks toward Scenic West Conference play beginning on February 27.
