Spanish Springs Slugger Signs On
Western Nevada College's first-year intercollegiate softball team is already looking ahead to next season with the signing of a second recruit today. Spanish Springs High School student Courtney Darby signed her letter of intent to play on the Wildcats softball team in the 2009-2010 academic year.
Darby is a, 6-foot-tall first baseman/pitcher, said Head Coach Scott Rasner. "Courtney is a very athletic power hitter and has decided to start pitching again."
She will join Carson High School pitcher/first baseman Casa Vondrak, who signed earlier with the Wildcats, and whom Rasner described as "also a power hitter with great potential.
"Both girls will be able to step in and make an immediate impact on our program. I am very excited to start off our recruiting with two such fine athletes," Rasner said. "I'm looking forward to scouting the area for more talented student athletes."
The coach said he will also hold an open tryout in May or June "to give players we missed an opportunity to make the team."
WNC plays in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, a Division 1 conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association. It is known as a powerhouse softball conference and includes three currently ranked teams: College of Southern Nevada (13), Salt Lake Community College (20), and College of Southern Idaho (27).
The Wildcats' next home series is Friday-Saturday, March 20-21, when they host Salt Lake Community College. Games are played at Centennial Park in Carson City.
