Play set for Wednesday-Saturday at John L. Harvey Field
The Scenic West Athletic Conference Region XVIII baseball tournament comes to Carson City on Wednesday, following WNC's sweep of Colorado Northwestern last weekend.
Top-seeded Western gets a bye on Wednesday and will play either Salt Lake Community College or College of Eastern Utah at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 7. All games will be played at John L. Harvey Field on the campus on West College Parkway.
Wednesday through Friday, games will be played at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and the championship game will be played at noon on Saturday. A tournament pass will be $25 and general admission will be $10 per day. Youth admission for those ages 6-14 is $5 per day and children 5 and under are free, as are WNC students with current student body ID.
Western ended the regular season with a 39-12 record overall and 33-6 conference record, five games ahead of second-seeded College of Southern Nevada, which finished at 27-10. Western won the season title by winning three games against Colorado Northwestern on Friday, 2-1, 6-1, and 6-0. The tripleheader was played because of weather concerns for the next day.
Western's 2009 team made its mark on the mound: Wildcats pitchers allowed the fewest number of runs in the SWAC, even though they pitched 19 more innings than any other team. Coach DJ Whittemore's disciplined charges have kept opposing players off the base paths with outstanding fielding, .969 percent, the fewest number of errors during the season, 40, and the most double plays, 26. The Wildcats also have allowed the fewest stolen bases, 46.
In pitching, Western trails only CSN with a team ERA of 3.17. CSN leads the conference with 3.05.
Whittemore said pitching and defense will lead the way for the team as they try to earn their second championship in their four years of play.
