Fresh from its 18-3 tournament victory on Saturday that brought home
the NJCAA Region 18 baseball championship, Western Nevada College will host the NJCAA Western District playoffs beginning Thursday at John L. Harvey Field.
Western will meet Northeastern Junior College from Sterling, Colo., the winner of the Region 9 tournament; College of Southern Idaho, Region 18 runner-up to Western; and Central Arizona College, a Region I powerhouse that has won eight of its past 11 conference titles. Western will play NJC Thursday at 11 a.m., and CSI will play Central Arizona at 3 p.m.
The double elimination tournament will have three games Friday and the championship game at noon on Saturday. Admission is $10 per day or $25 for the entire tournament. Youth 6-14 tickets are $5 per day and children 5 and under are free, as are WNC students with current student body ID.
All the teams in next weekend's district tournament come from wooden bat leagues, and will have to adjust to playing with metal bats as required by the NJCAA. The JUCO World Series also uses metal bats.
The winner of the tournament goes on to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. on May 23.
