GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The opportunities to win were present for the
Western Nevada College baseball team on Saturday.
Howard College (Big Spring, Texas) only led once, however, a leadoff
home run by Runey Davis in the 11th inning was the game-winner as the
Hawks handed Western Nevada College a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in opening
round play of the National Junior College Athletic Association JUCO
World Series before a near capacity crowd at 10,000-seat Suplizio Field.
Even though WNC enjoyed a 15-5 advantage in the hit column, it wasn't
enough for the Wildcats (45-13) against Howard (59-1), the No. 1 ranked
team in the NJCAA national poll. Never mind the rankings or win-loss
records, the Wildcats left Carson City this week with victory in mind.
"It was a good game. It was a dogfight," said Coach DJ Whittemore.
