Baseball Team Sets School Record for Wins
Western Nevada College saw its run at the JUCO World Series end with an 11-3 defeat against eventual winner Howard College on Thursday night, but made history with a school record 48 win season.
The Wildcats ended their season with a 48-13 record and third-place finish in the double elimination tournament. Both of their losses came against Howard, including a 4-3 loss in 11 innings on opening day.
Thursday's game was stopped after seven innings when the eight-run rule was invoked.
"It's so politically incorrect, I'm not disappointed," said Head Coach D.J. Whittemore. "I'm just eternally grateful to these guys on this team for making me look good and just playing hard all year."
WNC was led by Lance Ray, who went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Travis Feiner hit 2-for-3, including a two-run home run in the first inning. The Wildcats finished with nine hits.
Zach Neal pitched a complete game to earn the win for Howard. Neal, who has signed to play at Oklahoma University, struck out 10 and walked none.
Howard (Big Spring, Texas) scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take a lead it never relinquished. The Hawks scored three more runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-2.
Joe Leftridge hit 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI and Brian Johns 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI to lead Howard's 14-hit offense.
