Fall course set at WNC Carson, Douglas

Arabic Class Could Lead to Career

The roadmap between education and employment is easy to see with the opportunity to learn Arabic this fall at Western Nevada College Douglas and Carson City campuses. WNC Director of Information and Marketing Services Anne Hansen says entering the word "Arabic" into a job search web site instantly displays a wide range of opportunities available to someone who speaks the language fluently.

A quick online search of "Arabic" in the Monster.com web site returned 109 results on a recent day. A Washington Post jobs index showed 34 positions for those speaking Arabic. Craigslist New York City shows jobs with government contractors, the Army and private companies.

"Granted, this is a conversational Arabic class being offered, and the job listings usually ask for someone who's fluent. For a job as a political or military analyst, often some knowledge of Arabic is helpful, and a master's degree is required in a relevant field," Hansen said. "But the first step to fluency may be to enroll in a conversation course."

ARA 101B: Conversational Arabic I, will meet at WNC Carson City on Mondays, 11 a.m.-1:45 p.m., and at WNC Douglas on Mondays, 5-7:45 p.m.
