A college and career fair geared toward local Latinos is set for Saturday, Sept. 19, at Western Nevada College. Anyone who is considering technical and educational programs to toward a career or college degree is invited to the event, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at WNC's Auto Technology Center on West College Parkway. Information will be presented in English and Spanish.
The third annual Latino Community Day will be a chance to visit information booths and explore academic programs including automotive technology, business, computing, construction technology, criminal justice, machine tool technology, nursing and welding technology.
There will also be information about becoming a WNC student, and services such as academic counseling, English as a second language, and financial aid.
"It will be a fun day for the whole family," coordinator Lupe Ramirez said. "We hope to see students, parents, and family members of all ages. We'll have a free lunch and child care, hands-on activities and raffle prizes. The grand prize is a scholarship for a three-credit class.
"We want participation from our entire service area, and we will have a free shuttle bus from Dayton and Douglas high schools at 8:30 a.m."
Ramirez said that despite the challenging job market these days, Western is offering classes in careers that will be in demand for years to come.
"The Department of Labor says five of the top 20 jobs through 2016 are expected to be registered nurses, nursing aides, office workers, accountants and elementary school teachers," Ramirez said. "We provide the training and education to give you a great start on your career."
