Artist Reception Wednesday, Dec. 9, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Western Nevada College presents a new set of exhibitions in its Bristlecone Building art galleries, through Thursday, Jan. 7.
Showing in the Main Gallery is Galen Brown, a northern Nevada artist whose "Red, Blue and Other Colors," is a contemporary and unusual exhibit for this area. His art is often seen as a commentary on the repetitive nature of many of the occupations in today's world. He will be teaching the Fine Arts Portfolio Class during spring semester at WNC.
Brown grew up in a Lake Tahoe beach house, watching weather and the water change constantly, and this experience influences his art in the way he records the moods and the repetition of nature's waves. Brown's media include common materials from his work as a picture framer and wood worker and other items at hand.
Claudia Rios, a former WNC student, will be showing her new photographs in the Atrium Gallery. A graduate of the college's graphics program, Rios is completing a bachelor's degree in fine arts and graphics at University of California, Berkeley.
Rios brings a collection of hard-earned concert photos to Western. Bumps and bruises are part of the mix when you want to get close to the band and angle for a good shot.
In her words: "After countless nights of taking in too much smoke, being moshed into, and having my glasses broken at rock shows, I decided to bring along my camera to capture all these moments and more. Sure, bruises may not be part of your job, but they are mandatory in mine, the life of a photographer."
In the College Gallery, a student show will feature an exhibition of digital photographs from Professor Jayna Conkey's digital photography class. Their show is entitled "Ephemeral Light," a collection of recent photographs by the college's advanced digital photography students. Comprised of deep blacks and whites as well as vivid colors, these formal and conceptual works were created with the ephemeral quality of light in mind.
Western's art galleries are located in the Bristlecone Building on the campus at West College Parkway. All exhibits are free and may be viewed during normal business hours. The galleries will be closed from December 24 to January 3.
