Seven top high school baseball players from Nevada and around the West have committed to the Western Nevada College Wildcats for 2011. A signing ceremony took take place at the Peppermill Hotel-Casino Saturday prior to the Wildcats athletics fund-raiser featuring Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

According to Head Coach DJ Whittemore, "This is one of the finest groups of players WNC has ever recruited." It includes two top players from Northern Nevada, as well as standouts from Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, and several top players from the Northwest.

"Our recruiting coordinator, Jerahmie Libke, has worked very hard to bring some of the top players on the West Coast," Whittemore said. "We are really excited to welcome these players into the Western Nevada family."

Players signing:
Nick Finney: McQueen HS, Reno, NV. 6'0", 190 lbs., first baseman
Justin Farley: Bishop Manogue HS, Reno, NV. 5'11", 175 lbs, shortstop
Neil Lawhorn: Bishop Gorman HS, Las Vegas, NV. 6'0", 205 lbs., catcher/outfielder
Brady Shipley: North Medford HS, Medford, OR. 6'0", 165 lbs., RH pitcher/shortstop
Trevor Martin: West Seattle HS, Seattle, WA. 6'0", 190 lbs, shortstop
Sean Rehon: Puyallup HS, Puyallup, WA. 5-10, 185 lbs, outfielder/catcher
Bobby Pappin: Alta HS, Salt Lake City, UT. 6'1", 175 lbs, centerfielder

Coach Whittemore's comments on individual players:

Nick Finney: McQueen HS, Reno, NV. 6'0", 190 lbs., first baseman
"Nick is one of the top hitters in Northern Nevada and hails from one of the most successful programs in the north. He is a hard-nosed, old-fashioned ball-player that plays his best in big games. Our No.1 priority is always to recruit the best players in Northern Nevada and with Nick that is exactly what we have done. He has good power and a solid build - that is, a player that will continue to improve as he competes against better talent in college."

Justin Farley: Bishop Manogue HS, Reno, NV. 5'11", 175 lbs, shortstop
"Justin will be the starting shortstop for one of Northern Nevada's premier high school teams. Justin is extremely dedicated to improving his game and will rank among the most improved players in Nevada this spring. Justin is an outstanding student and plays the most difficult position on the field. He is a solid hitter and fielder -well rounded on both sides of the ball."

Neil Lawhorn: Bishop Gorman HS, Las Vegas, NV. 6'0", 205 lbs., catcher/outfielder
"Neil is a versatile player who both catches and plays outfield for the top high school program in the state of the Nevada. He has been a four-year starter and already has won three AAAA Nevada state championships, three AAA American Legion championships, and one national championship. Neil is a great hitter. We expect him to come in and compete for a spot in the middle of the lineup."

Trevor Martin: West Seattle HS, Seattle, WA. 6'0", 190 lbs, shortstop
"Trevor has played the last three summers for the premier summer team in the Northwest, Chaffey Baseball. Trevor led the team in hits last summer. He is a four-year varsity starter and has been twice named first team all-conference. Trevor is one the best hitters WNC has ever recruited, in the mold of former Scenic West Player of the Year Brian Barnett. His bat speed is outstanding and he has a very developed approach at the plate."

Bobby Pappin: Alta HS, Salt Lake City, UT. 6'1", 175 lbs, centerfielder
"Bobby is one the finest athletes ever recruited to WNC. He possesses great speed and a powerful bat, and will compete immediately for the centerfielder position. Bobby plays in the fall for the Utah Baseball Academy that has produced some of the top collegiate talent in the country. He is a four-year varsity starter and earned second team all-state honors. Bobby is a prized recruit who could play at many of the top four-year college programs. He is a tall, lanky athlete who should be able to steal bases and be one of the top defensive centerfielders in the conference."

Sean Rehon: Puyallup HS, Puyallup, WA. 5'10", 185 lbs, outfielder/catcher
"Sean is a tremendous athlete who starred as the top running back on his high school football team last season in which he rushed for more than 1,000 yards. Sean was also the SPSL AAA player of the year during his sophomore season and has been twice named first team all-state in Washington. This past summer he was the leadoff hitter and centerfielder for the Babe Ruth World Series Championship team. Sean's makeup fits perfectly into the Wildcat mold - he is a great student, competitor, and teammate. He has good speed and power and can play a multitude of positions."

Brady Shipley: North Medford HS, Medford, OR. 6'0", 165 lbs., RH pitcher/shortstop
"Brady comes to WNC from the Medford Mustangs and a program which has produced loads of talent for the Wildcats including LHP Cole Rohrbough (Atlanta Braves), RHP Logan Odom (USC), and current ace LHP Jordan Lewis. Brady was named the #6 prospect in the state of Oregon according to Baseball Northwest. Brady is a young guy with a huge upside. He already possesses an outstanding arm and great athleticism at shortstop."
