Western Nevada College opened the 2010 home baseball season by winning two of three seven-inning contests against the College of Eastern Utah Friday afternoon, with one more left to decide on Saturday at noon.

The Wildcats blazed to a 13-0 shutout in the opener at John L. Harvey Field. But the Wildcats cooled down in short order, falling 6-3 in game two before dominating the third matchup, 8-1.
WNC's ace pitcher Kramer Champlin held the Golden Eagles to only one hit in four innings for the win in the opener, and Riley Bevill closed the fifth and final inning on the 10-run rule of a scheduled seven-inning game. The Wildcats tallied 10 hits on balanced scoring, including RBIs by left fielder Brooks Klein, first baseman Eric Maupin, designated hitter Paul Cagle, designated hitter Kyle Conwell and third baseman Andrew Garcia.

In the second game, the Wildcats gave up one run in the top of the first and two in the third before tying it 3-3 in bottom of the third. Solid hitting by the Golden Eagles took its toll on WNC, with CEU racking up 10 hits, scoring in nearly every inning and holding the Wildcats to only three hits.
Starting pitcher Jake Waardenburg gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings before Jordan Lewis took the mound for the final 2 1/3 innings.

Winning pitcher was Josh Swenson of CEU, but WNC Head Coach DJ Whittemore had no criticism for Waardenburg. "He threw well, but they just hit where we weren't standing," he said.

In game three, WNC sophomore pitcher Jeremy Gendlek threw "a masterpiece" said Whittemore, and helped lead his team to an 8-1 victory. Among the highlights, the 6'1" right-hander retired the side in the top of the fourth inning, not unexpected to his coach as "he was throwing really well in Southern California, prior to this week's first home stand."

Even so, CEU tightened the game in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, adding a solo home run and then loading up the bases. That brought Dyllon Nuernberg in for the final out.

Among the highlights were two-run homers by both Klein and Kevin Taylor, a two-run RBI by designated hitter Kyle Conwell, and RBI doubles for Spencer Ofelt and Jonathon Sigado.

The series continues Saturday at noon.
