WNC comes out on top against SWAC leader
The seats were full at John L. Harvey Field for the much-anticipated match-up between the Western Nevada College Wildcats and the Coyotes of the College of Southern Nevada. The Wildcats entered the series in second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference behind the top-ranked Coyotes.
Pitchers for both teams kept a scoreless game one, until the fourth inning, when Coyote Trent Cook hit a home run to score Gabe Weidenaar and Bryce Harper for a 3-0 lead over WNC.
Wildcat Jay Skilton led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single and was brought home on an RBI double by Kevin Taylor. Kyle Conwell grounded out to bring home Taylor, making the score 3-2.
WNC pitcher Kramer Champlin gave nothing away to the Coyotes in the top of the seventh, and the Wildcats came alive in the final stretch. Eric Maupin hit a single to advance Chris Sinclair who was sent to first on a walk. Colby Sokol bunted, taking the sacrifice to advance the runners. Brooks Klein stepped to the plate and smacked the ball out of the park, sending the runners home and bringing the crowd to their feet. Wildcats won in seven innings, 5-3. Pitcher Kramer Champlin got the win.
In game two, Wildcat Conwell singled in the second inning, and advanced to second on a productive out by Pat McMeel. Sinclair followed with a deep single to left field, and Maupin bunted for the RBI to send Conwell home. WNC took the lead 1-0.
Spencer Ofelt slugged a home run to left center, to bring the score to 2-0 in the fourth. In the fifth, Klein singled and was sent home on an RBI double by Taylor. The score, 3-0 Wildcats.
The Coyotes earned three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, and scored two in the ninth bringing the score to 5-3, Coyotes.
Both Maupin and Klein walked in the bottom of the ninth, and Skilton belted an RBI single to bring in Maupin. Taylor grabbed a single RBI to score pinch runner Andrew Garcia, making the score 5-5, and taking the game into extra innings.
The game ended in the eleventh, with Wildcats Garcia and Skilton earning singles. The Coyotes walked Taylor to load the bases and bring up Ofelt. Ofelt scored Garcia to knock out the Coyotes, 6-5.
The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday, April 17, noon and 2 p.m. at John L. Harvey Field, Carson City.
