Press Release
The WNC softball team was unable to stop College of Southern Nevada in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 18 tournament Thursday in Salt Lake City. CSN topped WNC 5-1 and sent Western into the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament.
WNC struggled to score, managing only one run off five hits in the seven-inning contest. CSN jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings. The Coyotes added one more in the fourth before the Wildcats scored in the top of the seventh.
WNC's scoring came when second baseman Alex Arciniega doubled to start the final inning, then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by catcher Kelsie Fahr. Centerfielder Lisa Senko then smacked an RBI double that brought Arciniega home.
Now the Wildcats will play Snow College, Friday at 8:30 a.m. in hopes of a win and a chance to prolong the season.
Coach Leah Wentworth said the team will look to strike early in Friday's match-up. "We will focus on really bearing down in the first two innings, going after the lead-off batter and fighting to not give up runs."
