Baseball Alums Move Up In Professional Ranks

Nine former Western Nevada College baseball players are wrapping up successful seasons in the MLB minor leagues, including five that advanced in the ranks this summer.

Head Coach DJ Whittemore offered a rundown of the players and their seasons "as they continue the long, difficult climb into major league baseball." He singled out pitcher Justin Garcia (2006-2007) who became the second Wildcat player in the team's five-year history to advance to AAA level competition when he was called up in July. To date, 11 Wildcat players have signed professional contracts, including two this year.

Where they are now:
Jose Barajas - Baltimore Orioles - Aberdeen Ironbirds - of the New York-Penn league - Short-season A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles - pitched 33 innings pitched with just 14 walks with 43 strikeouts.

Kyle Farrell - Atlanta Braves - Played with Danville Braves of the Rookie Appalachian League - posted a 5-3 record in 64 innings pitched with a 4.04 ERA, and only walked seven batters.

Justin Garcia - Tampa Bay Rays - Finished the summer with Montgomery Biscuits of the Southern League - Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays - also pitched in two games with the AAA affiliate Durham Bulls earlier in the summer. Finished with 63 innings pitched and 55 strikeouts against just 17 walks. For his minor league career Justin has 227 strikeouts while walking just 56.

Dyllon Nuernberg - St Louis Cardinals- Pitched in 14 games for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals - the rookie ball affiliate of the St Louis Cardinals - had 20 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched.

Jesse Rasner - Baltimore Orioles - Aberdeen Ironbirds - New York Penn League - 3-0 record this summer in 15 games with 2.66 ERA in 23 innings pitched.

Lance Ray - Minnesota Twins Beloit Snappers - Midwest League - Class A affiliate of Minnesota Twins - 28 RBI's and 30 runs scored in 47 games this summer after being promoted from the Appalachian League earlier in the year.

Cole Rohrbough - Atlanta Braves - Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Carolina League - Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves - had 16 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched after being limited by shoulder injuries this summer.

Stephen Sauer - Winston-Salem Dash - Class A Advanced Affiliate of the Chicago White-Sox - made 26 starts and pitched 151 innings with an 8-10 record.

Mason Tobin - Anaheim Angels - missed entire 2010 season with arm troubles. Made eight starts in AAA before becoming injured.
