The Western Nevada College baseball team felt growing pains during last week's road trip to prepare them for Scenic West Athletic Conference play. WNC lost three of four to Pima Community College of Tucson, then dropped a doubleheader to NJCAA No. 5 ranked Central Arizona College before gaining revenge on No. 15 Yavapai College, 6-1, 4-3.
But Wildcats Head Coach DJ Whittemore is undaunted by his team's 6-7 record.
"This schedule was set up to challenge our team to the limit," he said. "Any time you play good teams you learn a lot about yourself and your teammates. We certainly took our lumps but overall we feel good about the way we competed."
The challenges will continue when WNC heads to California to play Riverside Community College in a three-game series this weekend. RCC is ranked 14th among southern California community colleges.
"We understand that we have a long road ahead of us and we are up to the challenge," Whittemore said.
The Wildcats open SWAC play on March 4-5 at home against Colorado Northwestern Community College.
