The Western Nevada College softball team took to the field under a sunny and clear sky, hosting the Coyotes of the College of Southern Nevada at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City Friday afternoon.
Ashley Hall started on the mound for Western, likely seeing some familiar faces as a Durango High School grad from Las Vegas. She pitched 5.5 innings and was relieved by Cassie Vondrak.
The Coyotes took an early 0-1 lead in the first inning. Wildcat Melanie Pfeiffer answered with a single, but was left stranded.
A double play followed by an easy out, kept CSN scoreless in the second. In the bottom of the inning, Cassie Vondrak was walked, Jordan Thomas singled, and Tera Tibbitts was hit on a pitch to load the bases, but all three were left on the bags. In the bottom of the third, Hall grabbed a double, and was also left stranded.
The Wildcats allowed one run in the top of the fourth, and answered with a triple by Mikaela Henshaw. She was brought home on an RBI single by Tibbitts, bringing the score to 1-2. CSN got three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to make the score to 1-7.
Western allowed nothing in the top of the seventh, and showed promise in their final at bat. Tibbitts led off with a single, followed by a double by Pfeiffer. Niki DiSera drove in the two runners with an RBI double. WNC eventually fell to CSN, 3-7. Hall took the loss for the Wildcats.
In game two, WNC grabbed an early lead when Pfeiffer doubled, and was brought home on an RBI single by DiSera in the first inning. CSN got three runs in the third inning and one in the forth, bringing the score to 1-4.
Megan Hein, Ashley Gleason and Vondrak each hit singles in the bottom of the fourth, but were left on base. CSN earned another run in the fifth, which WNC answered with a single by Tibbitts. Sarah Cudahy got on when hit by a pitch, and both runners were brought home on an RBI triple by Hein. The score tightened to 4-5, CSN.
CSN scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Seventh inning singles by Hall, Gleason (RBI) and Vondrak weren't enough to contain the Coyotes. The final score was 5-8, CSN. Pitcher Vondrak took the loss for Western.
Games continue Saturday, March 12 at noon and 2 p.m. at Edmonds Sports Complex, 1555 Livermore Lane, Carson City.
