Wildcats Grab Wins at Colorado Northwestern

The Western Nevada College softball team put some wins on the board this weekend, capturing three out of four games against Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely. The Wildcats tallied 50 hits and brought in 39 runs against the struggling Spartans, making the series one of the team's best showings this season.

Coach Leah Wentworth applauded her team's efforts. "We had a great weekend offensively. We put the ball in play and hit well throughout the series. All of our pitchers came home with a win under their belt."

WNC won Friday's opener, 16-7, in five innings. Tera Tibbitts hit three singles, earning two RBIs. Sarah Cudahy smacked a home run and a single. Jordan Thomas and Ashley Gleason each had two singles with one RBI apiece. Megan Hein tapped a single and double, and Ashley Hall smacked a two-run homer. Melanie Pfeiffer had two singles, Niki DiSera got a single and Mikaela Henshaw got an RBI single to round out the Wildcats hitting. Ashley Hall went the distance on the mound, facing 27 batters, striking out three and allowing eight hits.

In the second match-up, Thomas maintained the momentum with an RBI double and two singles, one resulting in an RBI. Cudahy tapped two singles, Pfeiffer smacked a double, Henshaw hit an RBI single, and Hall, Tibbitts, Tori Hynick, and Jamie Klopatek each singled. Pitcher Cassie Vondrak earned the win for Western. She faced 29 batters, striking out five and allowing only four hits. WNC won, 6-2.

In Saturday's opener, Thomas let nothing go by at bat en route to a 14-5 win. She hit an RBI triple, a single and a two-run homer. Tibbitts hit three singles, one an RBI. Gleason had two RBI singles, while Hall and Pfeiffer each had two singles with one RBI. Hein, Henshaw and Hynick (RBI) each had singles. Klopatek took the mound for Western. She faced 32 batters, struck out three and allowed eight hits.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats fell 3-6. Tibbitts hit two singles, one an RBI, and DiSera smacked an RBI double for WNC. Vondrak doubled, and remaining hits came in singles from Pfeiffer (RBI), Hall, Henshaw, Thomas and Hein. Hall pitched 2.1 innings and was relieved by Vondrak.

The Wildcats travel to Coeur d'Alene on Friday-Saturday, April 15-16, to face North Idaho College.
