Teamwork made the difference as Western Nevada College opened a four-game home series against the College of Eastern Utah Friday. The Wildcats won the opener 7-4 in seven innings and the nightcap, 10-0, in six innings at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City. The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
The Wildcats fell behind 0-4 in the opener before left-fielder Brooks Klein socked a three-run homer in the third inning to give WNC momentum.
In game two, the Wildcats dominated from the start, scoring eight runs on three hits and a CEU error in the first inning. Centerfielder Connor Eppard smacked a three-run homer to set the tone. Shortly afterward, designated hitter Beau Day hit an RBI triple to the left field fence. Left-fielder Don Glover and second baseman Taylor Smart each added RBIs. The Wildcats scored two more runs in the sixth inning on a single by Neil Lawhorn and an RBI single by Zach Hendrix.
Winning pitchers were Anthony Consiglio in the opener and Kody Gorden in the nightcap.
Afterward, Klein said his goal was to support his teammates when WNC fell behind in the opening contest. "I just tried to keep everybody in the game, and play every pitch," he said. "We're just getting used to playing at home" after playing 20 straight games on the road, due to bad weather that led to some games being moved to less wintry venues.
Head Coach DJ Whittemore said his team toughed out the opening contest when "all that could go wrong did," as the team initially fell behind 0-4. "Our offense did a great job and never let off the gas pedal," he said.
Whittemore said he expects a tough battle Saturday in the final doubleheader. His team, he said, must "hit your pitches, and hit with two strikes" in order to win.
With the wins, WNC improves to 23-3 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, and 29-12 overall. The Wildcats are ranked No. 14 in this week's NJCAA Division 1 baseball poll.
