The Western Nevada College baseball team has gone where no other Wildcats team has gone before, winning a record 43 regular season games, going undefeated in 20 straight at home, and clinching the Scenic West Athletic Conference 2011 title. But the team has aspirations to walk in the footsteps of two other Wildcats teams - the 2007 and 2009 teams that became Region 18 tournament champions, then went on to win the Western District championship and play in the JUCO World Series.
As the 2011 Wildcats prepare to host the Region 18 tournament Wednesday through Saturday at John L. Harvey Field, Coach DJ Whittemore took a moment to reflect on the journey so far.
"Our guys took their lumps early in the season, playing nationally ranked team after nationally ranked team," he said. "Couple that with the fact that we played 36 out of 40 on the road to start the year and you can imagine just how satisfying the finish has been.
"We are a team in the truest sense of the word, so it is hard to single out a player or a group, but our sophomores truly did an amazing job of leading this team and for that we are all indebted. Every year it seems the players rise to the challenge of making the WNC tradition stronger."
Whittemore said he has no illusions about the tasks still ahead of the Wildcats.
"We understand as well as anybody that the regular season was great but the real season starts this week," he said. "Nobody gets any credit for anything that has happened to this point in the season - everyone starts 0 and 0 and has to earn the right to keep playing."
