WNC Heading to Semifinal Round

Wildcats Outlast Southern Nevada in Tournament

Western Nevada College opened play today in the NJCAA Region 18 baseball tournament with a 4-3 win over College of Southern Nevada. The top seeded Wildcats out-hit the fourth seeded Coyotes 9-7, but had to battle back from a 3-2 hole in the eighth inning and hold in the ninth to win.

The victory keeps WNC in the winners bracket of the six-team, double elimination tournament. The Wildcats, who had a first-round bye, will face No. 2 Salt Lake Community College in the semifinals Friday at 9 a.m. at John L. Harvey Field. College of Southern Nevada will now play College of Eastern Utah at 4 pm today in an elimination game.

WNC outhit CSN 9-7, led by catcher Patrick McMeel (2-3 with an RBI), rightfielder Brooks Klein (2-4 with two runs scored), first baseman Sean Potkay (1-3 with one run scored) and RBIs from third baseman Chris Wooley, designated hitter Sean Dwyer, and shortstop Tanner Nielsen.

Southern Nevada relied on the bats of third baseman Christian Centrella (2-4 with one run scored) and leftfielder Cameron Harper (2-4 with two RBIs and one run scored). Harper's fielding also kept WNC at bay, picking off two fly balls atop the left field fence in the first inning.

The Wildcats scored runs in the second and third innings to lead 2-0. McMeel singled to score Klein, who had reached on a fielder's choice, and Wooley scored from second base on a single by Taylor Smart.

CSN was held scoreless until the fourth inning, when centerfielder John Pustay hit a full-count solo home run. The Coyotes took a 3-2 lead in the eighth off a two-run homer by Harper. WNC answered in the bottom of the inning with Dwyer's RBI single that scored Potkay, and a grounder to right field by Nielsen that scored Klein.

WNC starting pitcher Anthony Consiglio worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits before giving way to Chris Garrison, who got the win with two runs scored on three hits, and nine strikeouts.
