Bestselling author, researcher and farmer Eliot Coleman brings in the New Year for Nevada's farmers and gardeners as Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute presents two days of workshops on February 11-12.

“Four Season Farming with Eliot Coleman” meets Saturday, Feb. 11, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., at the Reno High School Theater, 395 Booth St. The workshop will focus on season extension practices for small farms. Cost is $75 for registration by January 27, and $85 afterward. Lunch is included.

Two additional 90-minute workshops will be offered on Sunday, Feb. 12, at Rail City Garden Center, 1720 Brierley Way, Sparks. Session 1 is 10:30 a.m.-noon, and Session 2 is 1:30-3:00 p.m. Cost per session is $45 before January 27 and $50 afterwards. They will focus on season extension practices for the home gardener, including how to use portable tunnels for the home garden. Each workshop will cover different topics, and participants can choose one or both.

Registration is required for all workshops as enrollment is limited.

Coleman has written several bestselling books, including The New Organic Grower, Four Season Harvest and the Winter Harvest Handbook. Coleman has been farming for more than 40 years. He and his wife own and operate Four Season Farm, an experimental market garden in Harborside, Maine.

Rail City Garden Center sponsored the event and will host the Sunday workshop. Owner Pawl Hollis features "Green College" classes throughout the year at his nursery and encourages home gardens of all sizes and types.

The WNC Specialty Crop Institute is an innovative program that teaches alternative farming methods for local growers. Funding for this project was provided by the Nevada Department of Agriculture and USDA/AMS through the Specialty Crop Block Grant.
