Wildcats Face Ranked Arizona Teams

First Weekend: Solid Hitting and Two Wins

The Western Nevada College softball team has opened the 2012 season in a serious way. The Wildcats packed several weeks worth of pre-season play into a single weekend series in southern Nevada, Jan. 27-29. The Wildcats played seven games against top-ranked Arizona teams and came away with two wins, edging out Phoenix College (ranked ninth in NJCAA Division II) and Gateway Community College, a contender within the competitive Arizona community college circuit.

“Overall we played really well,” said Coach Leah Wentworth. “Our team had the bats to hang in there with some of the top teams in the nation. When we play errorless defense behind our pitching, we are a tough team to beat.”

Melanie Pfeiffer (Wooster High School, Reno) led the team with nine hits for the weekend, closely followed by Taleas Marble (Corinne, Utah) who tapped eight hits. Jennifer Quam (Carson City High School, Carson City) and Jordan Thomas (Rathdrum, Idaho) came away with seven hits, Ali Lostra (Elko) had six, and Ashley Gleason (Clinton, Utah) had four hits for the Wildcats. Trinity Thom (Yerington High School), Alia Cox (Rathdrum, Idaho), Alexia Alley (Las Vegas), Courtney Lange (Wooster High School, Reno), Emily Nagel (Reno High School) and Rebecca Nelson (Douglas High School), also came away with hits for the weekend.

WNC edged out Gateway Community College, 4-2, with runs scored by Quam, Pfeiffer, Gleason and Nagel. Pfeiffer pitched five innings for the Wildcats, and was relieved by Alley who earned the win.

Against Phoenix College, Western came out on top, 9-5. Pfeiffer and Quam earned two runs each, and Cox, Lange, Marble, Nelson and Thomas, each grabbed a run. Alley pitched three innings to get the win; Lostra relieved her and earned the save.

The Wildcats will travel to Yuma, Ariz., Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 2-4 to face teams from Arizona, Southern California and Texas. The team’s first conference series will be Friday-Saturday, Feb. 10-11, on the road against Salt Lake City Community College.
